Lake 78A

Lake 78A sits just outside Cirencester, a proper working gravel pit that's transformed itself into something worth stopping for if you're in the area. It's one of those places that doesn't shout about itself - no visitor centre, no fancy signage - just water, wildlife, and the kind of peace you don't get near most Cotswolds attractions.

The lake itself is decent-sized, surrounded by mature trees and scrubland that's attracted all sorts of birds over the years. Birdwatchers make the pilgrimage here regularly, and it's easy to see why - you can spot grebes, herons, and various ducks without much fuss. The walking's gentle rather than demanding, which suits families who don't want anything too strenuous. Kids might get restless after an hour or so unless they're genuinely keen on spotting wildlife.

Access and facilities are basic - check locally before you go, as opening arrangements aren't always clearly publicised. Bring binoculars and a bird guide if you're that way inclined. It's free to visit, which at least means no guilt about a wasted trip.
