Lake 28 sits just outside Cirencester, a proper water body that's become something of a local favourite without the crowds you'd find at more famous Cotswolds spots. It's a working gravel extraction lake, which means it's been shaped by industry rather than nature, but that's actually part of its appeal - the water's clear, the banks are accessible, and it feels less manicured than you'd expect.

The lake itself is ideal for a couple of hours' walking or fishing if you're that way inclined. Walkers get a decent circuit round the perimeter, birdwatchers reckon it's worth a visit for winter waterfowl, and if you're staying at Hoburne Cotswold Holiday Park just a mile away, it's a straightforward leg to stretch after the caravan. The banks aren't difficult terrain, so it's manageable with kids, though don't expect theme park levels of entertainment - this is about fresh air and water views, nothing more.

Access appears to be free, and there's no formal gatehouse or facilities to speak of, so go early or late to avoid any issues. Summer weekends can get a bit busy with local families, but weekday mornings are genuinely peaceful. The wider Cirencester area means you're well-placed for tackling the Cotswolds more broadly - good walking country, solid market town infrastructure, and reasonably positioned between the larger holiday parks. Worth incorporating into a Cotswolds loop rather than making it your sole destination.
