Lake 101A

Lake 101A sits just outside Fairford, a quiet stretch of water that's more working gravel pit than tourist attraction, but that's precisely what makes it worth knowing about. The lake itself is a flooded quarry - proper industrial heritage, that - and it's become something of a local spot for fishing and a bit of birdwatching if you're patient.

Truth is, there's not much to "do" here in the conventional sense. No visitor centre, no café, no facilities worth writing home about. But that's the appeal. Walk the perimeter if the access allows and you'll get decent views across the water, especially in late afternoon when the light hits properly. The surrounding landscape is flat Gloucestershire farmland - nothing dramatic, but honest.

It's the kind of place that works best as part of a broader afternoon rather than a destination in itself. Stay at Great Farm, which is barely a mile away and actually excellent value, and you could combine a walk here with exploring Fairford's surprisingly good High Street and the church if you're into that sort of thing. Families with young kids will find it a bit underwhelming unless they're genuinely keen on spotting water birds. Fishermen and serious walkers will get more from it.

Free to visit, naturally. Give yourself an hour maximum unless you're specifically there for the fishing or birdwatching. Best in spring and early summer when there's actual life on the water.
