Laird & Lady Mulvey

The Laird & Lady Mulvey nature reserve sits quietly in Argyll, a few miles from Cairndow, and it's one of those places that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick tick-box visit. This is woodland and wetland habitat managed for wildlife - you'll spot birds, maybe deer if you're lucky, and there's something genuinely restorative about the understated approach here. No visitor centre, no car park with a gift shop. Just access to the reserve itself.

Walkers get the most from this one. The terrain isn't punishing, but you need to be prepared for muddy paths and the Scottish climate doing what it does best. Come in spring or early summer when the birds are active and nesting, or autumn when migration kicks in - genuinely worth timing your visit around. Kids will find it fine for an hour or so if they're the type who enjoy spotting wildlife; others might get restless without more obvious attractions.

You're well positioned for a caravan holiday in the area. Strathlachlan and Glendaruel Parks are both within three miles, and if you want to up the experience, Fyne Glamping and Stucreoch are minutes away. Combine this reserve with some proper exploring - Loch Fyne is right there, and the walking in the surrounding glens is excellent.

Free access is standard for Scottish nature reserves, though it's always worth checking locally in Cairndow before you set out. Allow a couple of hours for a decent circuit.
