Loch Garbhallt-Lochain

The water here is proper dark and still, the sort of loch that makes you understand why people write poetry about Scotland. Loch Garbhallt-Lochain sits quietly near Cairndow in Argyll, and it's the kind of spot you stumble upon rather than deliberately seek out - which is partly what makes it worth the visit. There's a modest car park area, and from there you can walk the shoreline or simply stand and absorb the place. The hills rise steeply around it, and on a clear day the light reflects off the water in ways that photographs never quite capture.

Walkers will find it rewarding. The paths aren't demanding, but they're proper scenic - good for a couple of hours if you're keen to explore both shores, or fifteen minutes if you just want a quick breather and a look around. Families with younger kids might find it a bit remote, and there's nothing commercial here - no café, no facilities worth mentioning - so you'll want to bring supplies from Cairndow. This is water in its working state, not a tourist attraction dressed up for visitors.

The caravan parks at Strathlachlan and Fyne Glamping are close by, making this an easy morning walk from either base. It's the sort of place to visit when you want quiet rather than company, and it delivers that in spades. Come in late afternoon when the light gets interesting, and bring a jumper - the wind can be sharp even when it's warm elsewhere.
