Laight Castle

The ruins of Laight Castle sit on a low rise near Maybole, looking out across South Ayrshire farmland like something half-remembered. What remains is a 16th-century tower house - not particularly grand, but sturdy enough that you understand why someone bothered to build it here in the first place.

You'll wander around the exterior mostly, since the interior is off-limits (the structure's too fragile for poking about inside). The walls still stand to a decent height, and there's enough detail in the stonework to get a sense of what life was actually like in these defensive tower houses during the medieval period. It's the kind of place where you can almost hear the wind through the old windows.

Walkers will appreciate the straightforward approach across open fields, though it's not a major trek - allow 20 minutes each way from the road. History types will find it worthwhile as an example of Scottish lowland fortifications, though it won't demand hours of your time. Families with younger kids might find it a bit sparse for a dedicated visit - there's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, just the bones of a building.

Free to visit, no facilities nearby. If you're staying at Freedom Fields Glamping just down the road, it's a pleasant walk to add to a park day. Best in decent weather when you can properly see the surroundings. On a grey day it feels a bit melancholy, which is either atmospheric or disappointing depending on your mood.
