Lagavulin Distillery

You're looking at a working distillery that's been here since 1816, which means the buildings themselves carry weight. The tour takes you through the malting floors, the stills, and the warehouses where the magic actually happens - not in some visitor centre, but in the real spaces where they make the stuff. The whisky itself is famously peaty and smoky, the kind of dram that divides opinion roundly. You'll either find it magnificent or undrinkable; there's no middle ground.

Allow two to three hours if you're doing a proper tour with tasting. Spirits enthusiasts will love the technical detail. Families with young kids might find it a bit dry, though the gift shop keeps people occupied. Winter opening hours (November to February) are Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm, so plan around that if you're visiting off-season.
