Lady Wood

A proper woodland walk without the pretension - that's Lady Wood in a nutshell. It's a modest forest sprawl near Oakham where the trees do what trees should do: provide shade, a bit of quiet, and enough space to actually breathe without bumping into crowds.

Once you're in, there are tracks threading through mixed woodland - nothing dramatically signposted, nothing that needs a guidebook. Families with younger children will manage the main paths fine, though it's not the sort of place where toddlers are entertained for hours. Walkers and dog owners get the most from it - the kind of morning walk that clears your head before breakfast.

The woodland itself is fairly typical Midlands fare: established trees, muddy patches that prove it rains here, and enough undergrowth to feel like you've actually left the village behind. It won't set your heart racing, but that's rather the point. There's no fee, no opening hours nonsense, and you can turn up whenever.

If you're based at Greendale Farm Caravan & Camping Park or Emily's Cut Camping - both just a short drive away - this works as a decent leg-stretcher between more ambitious days out. Head to Oakham itself for proper attractions, but use Lady Wood for the simple pleasures: fresh air, a bit of woodland therapy, and the knowledge that not every outing needs to be an expedition.
