Ladies Window

The Ladies Window is a geological quirk that stops you dead on the moorland above Bodmin. It's a natural arch carved through slate - narrow enough that you can squeeze through, tall enough that you won't bang your head. The thing is, it's not a dramatic sight from a distance. You have to walk right up to it on Bodmin Moor to appreciate the clever bit of weathering that created it.

This is walker territory, pure and simple. The moor itself is the real attraction - rolling, windswept, a bit bleak in the right way. The Window is really just a marker on a longer ramble. Most people allow an hour or so to find it, poke about, and head back. It's free, naturally, and entirely weather-dependent. Pick a clear day or you'll see about thirty metres ahead.

Families with older kids who don't mind a bog-standard walk will get something out of it. Younger children might find the actual arch underwhelming - there's no café, no exhibition, no getting around the fact that it's just a hole in some rock. Photography types will appreciate the texture and the moody landscape. History buffs should note it's been here for centuries, marked on old maps, though there's no visitor infrastructure or interpretation.

Staying at Rosebud Farm or Pencuke Farm puts you within striking distance. Both are decent bases for moor walks. The Window works best as part of a broader Bodmin Moor day out rather than a destination in itself. Worth the detour if you're already hiking, but don't make a special trip.
