Lacoma

The Iron Age hillfort at Lacoma sits on high ground above Lynton, commanding views across the Devon coast that make the climb up there genuinely worthwhile. What you're looking at is an ancient defensive settlement - earthworks and ditches that date back roughly 2,000 years, though frankly the ramparts blend into the moorland unless you know what you're looking for.

It's less manicured than many archaeological sites. There's no visitor centre, no interpretive boards spelling everything out for you. You turn up, you wander around the tumbled banks of earth, you imagine iron-age families living in roundhouses within these defences. For history enthusiasts and serious walkers, that hands-on element is exactly the appeal. Young children might struggle to see why a field of bumpy ground matters, though the hike itself and the views at the top usually win them over.

Allow a couple of hours if you're going to do it properly - the approach from Lynton involves decent walking, and you'll want time to potter about once you're up there. Go on a clear day. Mist makes the whole thing rather pointless.

It pairs well with a stay at Lynmouth Holiday Retreat, just four or so miles away. You could easily combine it with coastal walks in the area - North Devon's cliff paths are outstanding. Lacoma rewards curiosity rather than casual tourism, and that's rather the point of it.
