Lacey Green Windmill

You'll spot it from the road before you reach it - a proper brick windmill standing alone on the Chiltern ridge between High Wycombe and Princes Risborough. Lacey Green Windmill is the oldest working smock mill in Britain, dating back to 1650, and it's genuinely striking when you round the corner and see it silhouetted against open countryside.

Inside, the sails and grinding machinery are still intact, all wood and iron and ingenuity. The miller's work is on full display - the mechanics of turning grain into flour before electricity made it all redundant. It's not vast, so you'll walk round in thirty minutes unless you're the type to read every label and imagine the work that went into keeping this place running. History buffs will find it genuinely interesting; families with young kids might find an hour stretches it a bit.

The setting's the real draw. You're on high ground with views across the Chilterns, and the windmill makes a brilliant focal point for a walk. Worth combining with a base at Bella Vista Camping or Home Farm Glamping - both are just a few miles away - to make it part of a proper Chilterns ramble rather than a quick stop.

Access and opening hours are tricky - there's limited information available, so check ahead before dragging yourself out. When the weather's decent and the light's right, though, it photographs beautifully. A slice of English countryside that's earned its place in the landscape.
