Chinnor Hill Nature Reserve

The chalk grassland at Chinnor Hill rolls out across the Buckinghamshire countryside with the kind of understated drama you get from proper downland - not dramatic cliffs, but wide open space that somehow feels bigger than it looks. This is a nature reserve run by Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust, and it's the sort of place you come to see what the Chilterns looked like before they were ploughed up for farming.

The reserve itself is modest in size but packed with interest if you know what to look for. Chalk grassland plants bloom in summer - horseshoe vetch, bird's-foot trefoil, wild thyme - and the insects they attract are genuinely special. Chalkhill blues flutter about in July and August. Grasshoppers. Brown butterflies. Walkers will find several tracks threading through, nothing too strenuous, and the views back towards High Wycombe and the surrounding hills are solid without being showstopping.

History enthusiasts should come because this landscape tells you something real about how this part of England used to work. It's not a museum piece - it's actively managed grassland, deliberately kept open by grazing and cutting.

Allow an hour or two depending on how long you want to potter about. Free access, no facilities, just the reserve itself. Binoculars recommended.
