These two ninth-century Pictish crosses - rough, weathered slabs carved with that distinctive Celtic interlace - are the real deal, not reconstructions. You'll find them near Pitlochry, tucked away in a small churchyard that most people barrel past on their way to bigger attractions.

What draws folk here is the sheer age. These stones predate the Norman conquest by three centuries. The carving's faded now, which somehow makes them more compelling than some over-restored monument. You can run your fingers across the worn grooves and actually feel the work of craftsmen from an era when Scotland was properly Scottish.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from a visit - those who enjoy piecing together how people actually lived rather than looking at gilded reliquaries. Kids will manage twenty minutes if you frame it as an Indiana Jones-style archaeological hunt, but they won't linger longer. It's not a full afternoon's activity on its own.
