Creag nan Cop

The walk up Creag nan Cop from Pitlochry is short, steep, and absolutely worth doing if you're based in the area. You're looking at roughly 45 minutes to the summit from the main car park, climbing about 300 metres through mixed woodland before breaking out onto open moorland. The views back down towards Pitlochry and across the Tummel Valley are proper stunning - on a clear day you can see right across Perthshire. It's not a difficult hill by Scottish standards, but the gradient is relentless in places, so don't underestimate it. The path itself is well-maintained and straightforward to follow. You get real wildness without needing a full day's commitment, which makes it ideal if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks like Parkdean Resorts Tummel Valley or Glengoulandie and want to fit in an afternoon outing. Families with older kids will manage it fine - younger ones might struggle with the push. It's free to walk, obviously, and there's no time limit. Go early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday crowds, especially if you're visiting in summer. The peak itself is a bit of a cairn rather than a dramatic summit, but that's almost beside the point - it's the walk and the perspective it gives you on the landscape that makes it worth the effort. Pair it with a dip in Loch Tummel on the way back down if you're feeling brave.
