Knockgarrie (Cnoc Garaidh)

The walk up Knockgarrie rewards you with views across Dumfries and Galloway that make the effort genuinely worthwhile. It's not a difficult climb - nothing that'll leave you gasping - but it's steep enough to feel like proper exercise, and the summit clears your head in a way flat walks never do.

From the top you're looking out over farmland, forestry, and the kind of rolling landscape that reminds you why people bother with the Scottish Lowlands at all. The peak itself is modest compared to what's further north, but that's rather the point. You don't need technical kit or a dawn start. An hour or so from Castle Douglas gets you there.

It's excellent for walkers who want something more than a gentle stroll but aren't ready for serious hill work. Families with older kids will manage it fine - the sort of outing where everyone feels they've done something without anyone complaining about their legs afterwards. On a clear day, take a packed lunch and settle in for twenty minutes. The weather can turn quickly though, so don't assume Scottish Lowlands sunshine will hold.

If you're staying at Loch Ken Holiday Park just down the road, this works as a cracking half-day out. It fills the gap between a lazy morning and afternoon plans nicely. No facilities at the summit itself, so bring water. The nearest proper services are back in Castle Douglas, which is fine - keeps it feeling like a genuine walk rather than a packaged experience.
