Knock Leaven

The walk up Knock Leaven rewards you with something genuinely special - a proper vantage point across the Scottish Lowlands that doesn't require mountaineering experience. It's a modest peak by most standards, but from the summit you get unobstructed views across South Lanarkshire that make the climb feel worthwhile.

The route itself is straightforward enough for families with older kids, though the final push gets a bit steep. Most people manage it in under two hours return from the car park. The landscape shifts as you climb - moorland giving way to rougher ground - and you'll spot the odd walker and regular local heading up, which gives the whole thing a friendly vibe rather than feeling remote.

What strikes you most is how suddenly you're at the top. There's no drawn-out approach or false summits. Just a clear cairn marking where you've got to, and then the view opens out across the lochs and farmland below. On a decent day it's cracking; on a grey one, less so, so check the weather before you head out.

If you're based at Mount View Caravan Park near Biggar - just 2.4 miles away - this makes an excellent half-day outing. The park's location means you can be up and back before lunch, leaving the afternoon for exploring Biggar itself or pushing on to bigger walks elsewhere in the region. It's not going to blow your mind if you've tackled Scottish peaks properly, but it's a solid, achievable walk with genuine views. Worth the detour if you're staying locally.
