Kitty Tor

Kitty Tor is a proper granite outcrop that rises from Dartmoor near Okehampton, offering views that make the scramble worthwhile. It's not a massive peak - you're looking at something modest in height - but what it lacks in stature it makes up for in position. The tor itself is rocky enough to give you a sense of achievement without needing specialist gear.

The walk up is straightforward and takes about 20 minutes from the car park, though the final bit involves clambering over boulders. Once you're up top, you get expansive moorland views rolling away in all directions - moorland can look samey from a distance, but this vantage point lets you read the landscape properly. Clear days are best; poor weather makes the exposed ridge feel less inviting.

This is genuinely good for families who want a quick win - kids will enjoy the boulder scramble without it being proper mountaineering. Walkers using Lydford Caravan & Camping Park as a base (3.7 miles away) will find it a natural half-day outing, combining nicely with walks across wider Dartmoor. It's free and there's no formal opening times - you just turn up.

Give yourself an hour if you're taking photos and pausing to appreciate the moorland spreading out beneath you. Don't bother if visibility is genuinely dreadful; the rocks become more treacherous and the whole point - the views - vanishes. Fair-weather tors can be brilliant, but only when the weather cooperates.
