Kit's Wood

A proper woodland walk near Sevenoaks, Kit's Wood is the sort of place that rewards you for getting off the main roads. The forest floor is dense and shaded, with old oak and beech creating that cathedral-like quiet you rarely find anywhere near town. You're weaving between thick trunks, spotting patches of bluebells if you time it right in spring, and the paths wind through without too much faffing about.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a quick twenty-minute stroll - you can easily spend a couple of hours picking your way through, especially if you're stopping to identify what's growing. Families with young kids might find it a bit much; there's no proper facilities, no café, no playground antics. It's genuinely wild in patches, which some will love and others won't.

The real pull is that it feels removed from things. The undergrowth is thick enough that you lose sight of the outside world fairly quickly. There's something quite meditative about it if you're after a proper escape rather than a tourist tick-box.

If you're staying at nearby Gatehouse Wood Country Park - just six miles away - this makes a solid morning out before heading back for lunch. Go early, mind you. Midweek is better than weekends when the paths get busier. Bring decent boots; it gets muddy after rain.
