Kit's Coty Megalithic Burial Chamber

Standing in a field near Aylesford, Kit's Coty is one of those ancient monuments that stops you mid-stride. Three massive sarsen stones lean against each other like tired giants, all that remains of a Neolithic burial chamber built around 4,000 years ago. The capstone alone weighs several tons, yet here it sits, tilted but still holding strong. You can walk right up to it, which is more access than you get at many prehistoric sites.

The chamber itself is modest - you're looking at maybe ten minutes if you just want photos and a quick poke around the base. But the setting matters. It's exposed, solitary, surrounded by fields near the Medway Valley, and that isolation is precisely what makes it feel genuine. No gift shop, no interpretation board that's been vandalised, just stones and a bit of mystery.

History types and anyone interested in Bronze Age Britain will find it worthwhile, though it's not a destination in itself. Walk it as part of a wider loop around Aylesford if you're in the area. The nearby camping at Badgells Wood and Bearsted are both strong options for a few nights exploring the Medway Valley's archaeology and countryside.

Access is free and unrestricted, though there's nowhere to park right next to it - expect a short field walk from the nearest layby. Best visited on a clear day when you can actually see the Medway in the distance. Don't expect crowds or facilities. That's rather the point.
