Kitchen Barrow Hill

Kitchen Barrow Hill sits just outside Devizes and rewards a proper walk with views that stretch across the Wiltshire downs. It's a Bronze Age barrow - essentially a grassy mound - but what matters is the vantage point. On a clear day you can see for miles, with the Kennet Valley spreading out below and the ridges beyond catching the light.

The walk up takes maybe twenty minutes from the road, depending on where you park. It's not steep but it's exposed, so wind can be a nuisance. What you get is a peaceful spot that most casual day-trippers miss entirely. No crowds, no facilities, just you and the landscape.

Walkers will find it worth the detour, especially if you're combining it with a longer circuit around the downs. History types who care about Bronze Age settlement patterns will appreciate the context, though there's nothing dramatic to look at - it's the sense of continuity that appeals. Families with young kids might find it a bit underwhelming unless they're keen on the walk itself.

Free to visit, obviously. Allow an hour if you're taking your time and want to sit and absorb the view. Spring and early autumn are best - summer can get a bit dry and dusty underfoot.
