About Barrow Hill
Walkers will find the effort properly rewarded - on a clear day you can see across the Severn Valley to the Forest of Dean and beyond into Wales. It's not exactly challenging hiking, making it ideal for families with older children who fancy a proper walk without the full mountain experience.
The summit itself is rather unremarkable, just open grassland with a small cairn, but the 360-degree panorama more than compensates. Early morning visits work best, when the mist often clings to the river below and the light catches the surrounding hills beautifully.
Being freely accessible year-round, Barrow Hill makes a decent half-day excursion from any of the nearby camping spots. West End Farm and Baldwin's Brook Glamping are both within easy driving distance, as are several caravan parks along the Severn including Severnside Boat & Caravan Park. Allow two hours for the round trip, including time to appreciate the views at the top. Dogs love it here too, though keep them on leads near the summit where sheep often graze.
