Kirklees Light Railway

A miniature steam railway running through the South Yorkshire countryside - that's what you get at Kirklees Light Railway, and it's far more absorbing than it sounds. The line stretches for a couple of miles through proper green belt, with trains pulling vintage carriages past fields and woodland. You're sitting in actual working steam engines here, not some theme-park facsimile, and there's something rather magical about the slow chug and hiss of it all.

It's brilliant for families with younger kids who find museums tedious but still enjoy the romance of trains. Adults get their own kick out of it too - the engineering is genuinely interesting if you bother to chat with the volunteers who run the place. Allow a good couple of hours if you're doing the full ride and hanging around the station building.

The railway operates seasonally, so check ahead before you plan around it. Worth knowing it's free to wander the station grounds, though there's a modest fare for actual rides. Location-wise, you're close enough to Sheffield for a day trip, or if you're camping locally - High Lea Farm Camping is only 4.6 miles away and excellent - you could make it part of a longer countryside break alongside other attractions in the area.

It won't blow your mind if you're not already a train enthusiast, but it's a genuinely pleasant couple of hours. The kind of thing that sticks with kids long after the holiday ends.
