Kirkcaldy Museum and Art Gallery

The galleries sit right on Kirkcaldy's waterfront, which immediately sets the tone - you're looking at the Firth of Forth while wandering through art. It's free to get in, which is proper brilliant for a rainy afternoon or if you've got kids who might lose interest after an hour.

The collection spans Scottish art, decorative work, and local history. There's real stuff here - not just polished corporate fare. You'll find paintings that actually make you stop, ceramics that show genuine craft, and galleries dedicated to the town's industrial past (linoleum manufacturing, mainly). If you're into design history or Scottish painting, this deserves a couple of hours. If you're dragging reluctant teenagers around, the waterfront location at least gives you somewhere decent to head afterwards.

Thursday evenings stay open until seven, which is useful if you're visiting from one of the nearby caravan parks - Kinghorn Harbour, Sandhills, or Pettycur Bay are all within four miles, making this a natural stop during a Fife coast holiday. The galleries work well alongside walks along the promenade; you can easily combine both in a morning.

Timing-wise, allow 90 minutes minimum if you're actually looking at things rather than just walking through. The Saturday hours are tight at 10am to 4pm, so plan accordingly. It won't blow your mind if you're not particularly interested in art, but if you are, it's well worth the detour from the M90.
