Kingsferry Bridge

The Kingsferry Bridge is one of those structures that stops you mid-conversation. Spanning the creek between the Isle of Sheppey and the mainland near Sheerness, this 1960s swing bridge is properly impressive - a functional piece of engineering that actually works, which is rarer than you'd think. You can watch it rotate when a boat needs to pass through, and there's something satisfying about witnessing that massive steel arm pivot open. From the approach roads on either side, the views across the water are genuinely decent, especially at dusk when the light hits the metalwork just right.

It's not a destination where you'll spend hours, but it's worth a detour if you're exploring Sheppey or heading between the island and the mainland. Engineers and anyone who appreciates industrial design will find it genuinely interesting. Families with younger kids might manage ten minutes of enthusiasm before asking what's next - it's more of a photo stop than an activity. The bridge itself is free to cross and see, though there's no visitor centre or facilities directly at the site.

For a longer stay, combine it with walks along Sheppey's coast or visits to the seafront at Sheerness itself.
