Kingsett Down

The walk up Kingsett Down rewards you with proper moorland views across Dartmoor, though it's not one of those dramatic Tor climbs you see on postcards. It's a gentle rise through heather and grass, best tackled from Okehampton side, and you'll likely have the place mostly to yourself even in summer.

Once you're up there, the vista opens out nicely across the high moor - you can see for miles on a clear day, which matters more than the height itself (it's only 1,559 feet). The walk takes a solid hour or so depending on your fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find it a bit of a slog without much to break it up.

This works well as part of a broader Dartmoor ramble rather than a destination in itself. From Okehampton, you're close enough to combine it with other peaks or riverside walks. The nearby Lydford Caravan & Camping Park sits just 2.5 miles away and is excellently rated - a proper base for Dartmoor exploring. Langstone Manor, a touch further at 4.6 miles, offers glamping pods if you fancy something less spartan.

Go midweek if you can, and pick a day when the mist isn't rolling in off the moor. It's free, obviously - it's Dartmoor. No facilities up top, so bring water.
