Walking through King's Hat Inclosure near Lyndhurst feels like stepping into the New Forest proper - ancient woodland, proper quiet, and the kind of place where you half-expect to spot a wild pony round the next corner. The trails wind through old-growth forest with birch and oak, the undergrowth thick enough to make you feel genuinely away from things even though Lyndhurst is only minutes back. Birdwatchers will get the most from it - woodpeckers, nuthatches, and if you're lucky, the rarer residents that the New Forest still shelters. It's also decent for a family walk if your kids are old enough to enjoy a ramble without constant entertainment. Allow two hours minimum to do it justice, longer if you're serious about spotting wildlife. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so bring water and dress for the weather - it can feel colder and damper under the trees than you'd expect. Free to access, no charge at the gate. The reserve works brilliantly as part of a wider New Forest circuit - pair it with stays at Roundhill Campsite or Long Meadow Campsite, both within easy reach, and you've got a proper woodland break without the crowds of the main forest attractions. Late spring and early autumn are best - fewer midges than summer, drier underfoot than winter.
