Kings College Playing Fields

Kings College Playing Fields is a proper slice of greenspace just outside Uxbridge - the sort of place you stumble across and think, how have I not been here before? It's a nature reserve that's maintained as open grassland and woodland, giving it that slightly wilder feel compared to manicured park estates. You'll find yourself walking through meadows where the grass actually gets a bit long, with tree-lined boundaries that feel genuinely peaceful rather than managed.

Walkers will get the most from this one. There's no adventure playground or cafe to anchor a day trip, but that's precisely the point. It's good for an hour's ramble if you're camping nearby at Wyatts Covert, or a proper two-hour loop if you've got the time. Birdwatchers occasionally spot something interesting here - bring binoculars if you're keen. Families with restless toddlers might find it a bit samey after half an hour, but older kids who can appreciate a decent walk will be fine.

The whole thing's free, obviously, being a nature reserve. No visitor facilities that we know of, so bring water and sort yourself out before you arrive. Best visited spring through autumn when the grassland's at its best. Winter can feel a bit bleak, all wet grass and muddy edges.

From Wyatts Covert Campsite, it's barely four miles away, making it a solid morning or afternoon outing between bigger attractions. Nothing flashy, but genuine - the kind of place locals actually use rather than tourists.
