King George V Playing Field

Just outside Warwick, this modest nature reserve sits on what was once a playing field - hence the name. It's essentially a patch of Warwickshire countryside that's been left to do its thing, with rough grassland, scrubby woodland, and ponds that attract waterfowl and the odd dragonfly if you're lucky enough to visit in summer.

There's nothing flashy about it. No visitor centre, no manicured paths, no tea room. What you get instead is a genuine bit of unmown land where local wildlife actually lives rather than being observed from behind fencing. Walkers appreciate it for exactly that reason - it's quiet, it's free, and it doesn't pretend to be anything other than what it is.

The reserve works brilliantly as a short morning walk between Warwick town centre and longer rambles in the area. Birdwatchers will find it worthwhile in spring and autumn migration periods. Families won't linger for hours, but kids who like poking about in long grass and hunting for insects will get something out of a 45-minute potter. Expect muddy boots in winter.

If you're camping at one of the local parks - Coplow Woodland Retreat is just 1.5 miles away - this is the sort of place to pop into on a quiet morning before heading elsewhere. It's not a destination in itself, but it's a proper local space that feels lived-in by wildlife rather than designed for humans. That's rather the point.
