Kinderlow Cavern

You'll find the entrance tucked into the hillside above Buxton, and honestly, the walk up pays dividends before you even step inside. Kinderlow is one of those proper cave systems where you can actually explore on your own - no guide, no ropes, just you and the limestone passages. The main chamber opens up surprisingly spacious, with shafts of light cutting through from above if you're there during daylight hours.

It's free to wander in, which feels like a small miracle given how many attractions charge these days. Allow a good hour if you're the thorough sort, poking into side passages and letting your eyes adjust to the darker recesses. The cave itself isn't massive - it won't swallow your entire day - but it's an excellent stop if you're combining it with other walks around the Peak District.

Families with older kids will get the most from it; younger ones might find the confined passages a bit unsettling. The ground underfoot can be muddy and uneven, so decent footwear matters. Come in autumn or spring when the water levels aren't at their worst and you won't be queuing at the entrance.

If you're based at Castleton Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite nearby, it's well worth the short drive over. Works nicely as part of a larger Peak District cave circuit - you could tick off Speedwell Cavern and Peak Cavern on the same loop without feeling rushed.
