Kilranney Chapel

The ruins of Kilranney Chapel sit quietly on the Causeway Coast, a few miles inland from Ballycastle, and there's something genuinely moving about the place - no crowds, no gift shop, just old stone and moss and the sense that people have been gathering here for centuries. It's a small medieval church, roofless now, with thick walls and a simple beauty that doesn't demand much explanation. You can walk right in, which is lovely. The graveyard around it feels peaceful rather than melancholy, and on a clear day the views across towards the coast remind you why someone chose this spot to build a place of worship in the first place.

This works best if you're already walking the Causeway Coast or based near Ballycastle - it's not a destination in itself, more a worthwhile detour if you're doing a morning hike or exploring the area's religious heritage. History enthusiasts will find the medieval masonry interesting, and it's genuinely quiet, which families with young children might appreciate as a short break from busier attractions. Twenty minutes to half an hour is plenty to look around properly.

If you're staying at Watertop Farm - excellent spot, that - Kilranney Chapel makes a pleasant addition to a day's exploring. Free to visit, no facilities on site, and best reached by car rather than on foot unless you're a serious rambler. Go in decent weather if possible, as it's exposed and can feel gloomy when it's wet.
