Kilndown Wood

The woodland around Kilndown, near Wadhurst, is proper Sussex Weald territory - all tall conifers mixed with native broadleaf trees and the kind of undergrowth that makes you feel properly away from things. Walking here feels genuine rather than manicured. Paths wind through the forest floor with that distinctive smell of damp earth and old needles underfoot, and on quieter days you might spot deer or hear woodpeckers at work.

It's the sort of place where families with decent-aged walkers will get their money's worth. Young children might lose interest after an hour or so unless they're the type who love splashing through muddy bits and hunting for sticks. Serious hikers could easily spend half a day here linking different routes, though don't expect dramatic viewpoints or dramatic elevation changes - this is about the simple pleasure of being inside a proper wood.

If you're staying at one of the local camping spots - Hopgarden Glamping or Glassenbury are both within striking distance - Kilndown Wood makes an excellent afternoon venture without needing a car journey. The Wadhurst area itself sits in excellent walking country, so you could easily string together a few woodland spots across your stay.

Access appears unrestricted, and there's no formal visitor infrastructure, so come prepared with decent boots and an OS map. The woodland is best visited between late spring and early autumn when paths are manageable and the canopy creates proper shade on warmer days.
