Kilmory Chapel

You'll find yourself standing in front of a rather modest grey-stone chapel on the Isle of Gigha, just off the Argyll coast near Tarbert. Kilmory Chapel is small - genuinely small - and that's rather the point. This 13th-century building sits quietly in what feels like the middle of nowhere, surrounded by nothing much except grass, sky, and the occasional sheep.

Inside, the real draw is the collection of medieval carved stones. They line the walls like a museum exhibit that someone forgot to build a building around first. Tombstones, grave slabs, and fragments dating back centuries lean against the stone walls. Some are so worn you can barely make out the carved figures, others show knights and clerics in surprisingly fine detail. It's the kind of place that makes you feel like you've stumbled onto something archaeologists should probably be more fussed about.

This works best for history types and anyone who gets a kick from wandering around old churches without the crowds. It's not going to hold children for long - give it 20 minutes and you're done. The walk to reach it from the ferry is pleasant enough, though there's not much else on Gigha to anchor a full day trip.
