Kilmore Presbyterian Church

You'll find this stark Victorian church standing solid on the outskirts of Downpatrick, a proper statement of 19th-century Protestant confidence. The building itself is unremarkable from the outside - grey stone, pitched roof, the sort of thing you see dotted across Ulster - but it's worth stopping for if you're doing the Downpatrick loop.

Inside, there's decent ironwork and decent windows if you're into that sort of thing. The real draw is the graveyard, which tells you plenty about the area's social history if you've got the patience to wander between the headstones. Local history types will find it worthwhile; casual tourists probably won't linger more than twenty minutes.

The church sits about five miles from Delamont Country Park, so it works as a brief cultural break if you're based there for the week. Delamont's the proper draw - excellent grounds, good facilities - but Kilmore slots in if you want to break up the day with something a bit different. You won't need to book ahead or pay admission, which keeps things simple.

Best visited mid-morning when the light's decent for photography and you'll avoid any services. Don't expect signage or visitor facilities. It's the kind of place you appreciate if local history matters to you, but easily skippable if you're here just for the parks and countryside.
