Killyleagh First Presbyterian Church

The grey stone church sits quietly on Main Street in Killyleagh, a working Presbyterian place of worship that's been going since 1744. It's modest, dignified - the sort of building you'd walk past without much thought if you weren't paying attention. But if you're touring around Downpatrick and the surrounding area, it's well worth stepping inside for ten minutes.

What strikes you first is the simplicity of it. High ceilings, pale walls, clear glass windows that let proper light flood through. There's a sense of calm that these old churches do rather well. The interior is largely original, which means you're seeing much the same thing worshippers saw two centuries ago. Locals are generally friendly if you pop in respectfully during daylight hours.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from this - it's a solid example of 18th-century Presbyterian architecture without the grandeur of a cathedral. Families won't find much to occupy restless children for long, but if you're doing a slow heritage crawl through County Down, it slots in nicely alongside Delamont Country Park just up the road. The caravan parks at Delamont and Castle Ward make good bases for exploring the town and its churches.

There's no admission charge as far as we can tell, though opening times aren't always consistent - it's an active congregation, not a museum. Check locally in Downpatrick before making a special journey. It's the sort of place that rewards curiosity rather than crowds.
