Keynor Copse

A proper woodland walk rather than a destination in itself, Keynor Copse sits just outside Chichester and makes for a decent stretch of legs if you're camping nearby. The forest floor is thick with leaf litter, the canopy dense enough that even on bright days it feels cool and sheltered. You won't find facilities or marked trails here - this is the kind of place you navigate by instinct, following the paths worn by other walkers and the occasional dog.

It works best for families who don't need hand-holding entertainment or serious hikers after a proper challenge. Kids aged five upwards will enjoy scrambling through the undergrowth for an hour or so, though there's not much to actually do once you're in. No visitor centre, no playground, no views to speak of. Just trees and quiet.

If you're staying at Creative Camping barely half a mile away, or at Haven Church Farm just down the road, it's absolutely worth slipping into for a morning walk before breakfast or an evening amble. Combine it with a proper explore of Chichester itself - the cathedral and market town are only a few miles south - and you've got a solid half-day sorted. The woodland's free (as far as anyone knows) and open whenever daylight permits. Allow an hour to two hours depending on how aimless you're feeling. Best visited autumn through spring when the ground isn't quite so muddy, though it's never a disaster.
