Kessock Bridge

You can't miss Kessock Bridge if you're driving into or out of Inverness - it's that dramatic red arch spanning the Moray Firth, connecting the city to the Black Isle. Built in 1982, it's become the unofficial symbol of the Highlands, and frankly, it's worth stopping for rather than just whizzing across it. The bridge itself is free to cross and there's a decent viewpoint on the northern approach where you can pull over and actually look at what you're standing on. On a clear day the views across the water are proper striking, with the water turning silver and the distant hills rolling away. The span is an engineering job worth appreciating - that red steel cable-stayed design isn't just functional, it's genuinely handsome. Most people spend ten minutes here, taking photos and admiring the vista towards Beauly Firth. It's not a destination in itself - you're not going to spend your afternoon here - but if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks like Coulmore Bay or Bunchrew, it's absolutely on the way to Inverness town centre. If you've got kids, they'll be more interested in the novelty of walking across such a prominent structure than hanging about to admire engineering details. The bridge works best as part of a bigger drive around the Black Isle or as a stopping point on the journey up towards Loch Ness and the glens beyond.
