Kent Battle of Britain Museum Trust

The Battle of Britain Museum Trust sits just outside Folkestone, housed in what used to be RAF Hawkinge - an operational airfield during the actual battle in 1940. Walking round this place hits different when you realise the Spitfires and Messerschmitts were literally taking off from the ground beneath your feet.

Inside, you'll find restored aircraft, personal accounts from pilots and ground crew, plus the usual wartime memorabilia - uniforms, weapons, photographs. The centrepiece is genuinely impressive: seeing a real Spitfire or Hurricane up close reminds you just how cramped and fragile these machines were. There's also a good line in cockpit reconstructions so you get a proper sense of what those pilots were staring at during combat.

This works best for history buffs and military enthusiasts rather than young kids, though teenagers studying GCSE history will find it valuable. You'll want a couple of hours minimum, longer if you're the type to read every placard.
