Kenmure Castle

The ruins stand on a peninsula jutting into the loch, and honestly, that's the best bit about Kenmure Castle. You get proper views across the water from the approach - water that's dark and still on most days, reflecting the surrounding hills nicely. The castle itself is a roofless tower from the 15th century, built by the MacDowall family, and what remains isn't much to write home about. Four walls, some tumbled stones, a handful of window openings. The ground floor is largely submerged in murky water, so you're viewing this from the outside.

Historians and castle-spotters will appreciate the setting and the lineage, but anyone expecting a walkthrough experience will be disappointed. There's no interpretation board, no café, nothing that suggests someone's keen to welcome visitors. The castle's close to Castle Douglas - a proper little market town with actual facilities and shops - so it works as a quick addition to a broader day out rather than a destination in itself.

If you're staying at Loch Ken Holiday Park nearby, this is a manageable detour for a photograph and a brief stop. Kids might find it dull after five minutes. The water's interesting if you're into birds - terns and osprey have been spotted here - which elevates it slightly for wildlife watchers. Walkers benefit most: the lochside paths around here are the real draw. Allow 20 minutes maximum for the castle itself. Free to visit, accessible year-round.
