About Kenilworth Castle
What you're actually walking around is the skeleton of a fortress that mattered. Built in 1122, it became a royal stronghold, then a playground for powerful nobles, then a battlefield during the Civil War when Parliamentary forces did their level best to wreck it. The gatehouse is massive. The keep still stands proper tall. And the lake - the mere, as they call it - that was dug out for show as much as defence.
History obsessives will spend a solid three hours reading every interpretation board and imagining the feasts in what used to be the great hall. Kids aged eight and up tend to get it; younger ones get bored after forty minutes of "look at the old wall." The walk around the perimeter is genuinely lovely, especially if you time it right and the light catches the water.
It's English Heritage, so there's an entrance fee and you'll pay for parking. Worth budgeting an afternoon rather than a quick stopover. From Kenilworth town itself, it's just a short walk. If you're basing yourself at Knight's Village near Warwick Castle or one of the caravan parks dotted around - Mousley House Farm is closest at just over four miles - you could easily visit both castles in a long day. Go early if you can; it gets busy with school groups.
