Kelvedon Hall Wood

The woodland around Kelvedon Hall, just outside Maldon, is proper Essex woodland - ancient oak and beech mixed with younger growth, the sort of place where the ground squelches underfoot even when it hasn't rained much. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, which means you get the forest largely as it is rather than as someone's thought you ought to experience it.

Walks through here range from twenty minutes to a couple of hours depending on which paths you take. The woodland sits in gently rolling country, so it's not strenuous, though the paths can be muddy and uneven in places. You'll see birds, the occasional deer if you're quiet and lucky, and in spring the bluebells do genuinely put on a show. Autumn's excellent too - fewer people, better light filtering through the trees.

Best suited to walkers and families with children old enough to manage uneven ground. If you're after manicured picnic areas and waymarked trails with interpretation boards, you'll be disappointed. This is a proper woods walk, the sort where you navigate by instinct and landmarks.

If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby parks - Teybrook Orchard, Mill Beach, or Osea Leisure - this gives you something to do between beach days that doesn't mean going into Maldon town itself. It's free to access and worth an hour or two if you've got the time. Go early in the morning for the best chance of spotting wildlife and avoiding other visitors.
