Keldas

A modest fell that rises above the Penrith area, Keldas won't set your heart racing, but it's a solid afternoon's work if you're based at one of the nearby sites like Crossgate or Sykeside. The walk is straightforward enough - nothing technical, nothing that demands specialist kit. You get decent views across the Eden Valley and towards the Lakeland fells proper, which beats staring at the campsite all afternoon.

The appeal here is pure simplicity. It's the sort of peak that appeals to families who want their kids to feel like they've actually climbed something without the slog of a four-hour round trip. Keen walkers might find it a bit tame as a standalone, but it works brilliantly as part of a larger fell walk if you're planning a few days around Penrith.

Allow a couple of hours from the nearest approach, give or take depending on fitness. The ground underfoot is typical Lake District - boggy in places, firm on others. Not a nightmare, but respect it in wet weather. There's no admission charge because there's nothing to charge for; it's just the hill itself.

If you're staying at Ullswater Holiday Park or one of the campsites further out, Keldas makes a good short break option between bigger days out. It's close enough to Penrith for a quick visit, but far enough away that you'll feel like you've actually left civilisation. Worth it mainly for its convenience and accessibility rather than as a standalone destination.
