Kaims Castle, fortlet

You'll find yourself standing on a Roman fortlet that's seen nearly 2,000 years pass without making much fuss about it. Kaims Castle is tucked away near Crieff - little more than earthwork remains now, but that's rather the point with these Roman sites. The ditches and banks are still visible if you know where to look, telling the story of a small outpost that once guarded the frontier.

It's genuinely a walkers' thing more than a tourist attraction. There's no visitor centre, no café, no interpretation boards telling you what to think. You show up, have a poke around the bumpy ground, and either the history grabs you or it doesn't. Kids might find it underwhelming compared to a castle with walls, but anyone interested in how Rome actually held territory - not just the showy stuff - will get something out of the visit. Allow an hour if you're serious about it, twenty minutes if you're just passing through.

The site's free to access as far as anyone can tell, with no formal opening hours since there's nothing to open. Spring or autumn suits it best - the ground's clearer and you're less likely to be fighting through knee-high summer grass.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Craighead Howf or Braidhaugh, Kaims makes a reasonable add-on to a walking day in the area. Don't expect grand views or obvious drama, but if Roman military engineering interests you, it's well worth the detour from Crieff.
