Jumbo (Balkerne Water Tower)

You'll spot it from the road before you realise what you're looking at - a proper Victorian water tower that locals have nicknamed Jumbo, looming up from the Balkerne area just outside Colchester. Built in the 1880s, it's a brick industrial structure that's somehow become rather iconic in these parts, even if most visitors have no idea what it actually is.

The appeal is mainly for industrial heritage types and photographers after something a bit different. There's no visitor centre or ticketed experience - you're essentially looking at the outside of a functional (or disused, depending when you visit) piece of Essex history. The tower's quite striking though, and if you're already in Colchester exploring the Roman ruins and castle, it's the sort of thing worth a quick detour to photograph and understand how the town used to work.

Historically minded visitors get the most from it, along with anyone interested in Victorian engineering and how communities actually functioned before mains water became universal. Kids might find it mildly interesting for five minutes, but they won't get hours out of it. It's a 'drive past and pop out for a photo' type of attraction rather than a destination in itself.

If you're camping at Colchester Country Park or Ardleigh Caravan & Camping Park, it's close enough to include on a lazy afternoon exploring the area. Free to view from outside, naturally. Best value comes from treating it as a side note to a proper Colchester visit rather than a main event.
