Joss Naylor Cairn

A modest stone pile on the fell above Holmrook marks the resting place of Joss Naylor, the legendary fell runner who became something of a local legend in these parts. If you know the Lakes, you'll know the name - Naylor set fell running records that stood for decades, and this cairn is where locals leave tributes to a man who basically defined what it means to move fast through rough terrain.

You won't find much ceremony here. It's a walker's monument, really - the kind of thing you stumble upon while traversing the fells rather than deliberately trek to as a destination. But that's rather the point. Naylor was a working farmer who ran the hills for love of it, not for Instagram moments. The cairn sits at proper altitude with views that justify the climb regardless.

Historians and serious Lake District walkers will get the most from this. It's not a visitor centre or interpretation board kind of place - you need to know who Naylor was to feel the weight of it. Families with young kids might find it a bit abstract; the appeal is more spiritual than interactive.

Getting there means leaving your car near Holmrook and heading up onto open fell. There's no charge, no operating hours to worry about. Allow an hour or so from the village if you're not a regular hill walker. Pair it with a base at Fisherground Campsite, just down the road, and you've got access to proper fell country without the Windermere tourist crush.
