John's Wood

John's Wood sits just inland from Southwold, a proper working forest that doesn't pretend to be anything grander than it is. It's the kind of place where you can actually walk without bumping into a coach party, which in Suffolk is saying something. The woodland itself is straightforward - good paths, plenty of conifers mixed with broadleaf, and the sort of quiet you don't get near the coast these days.

Walkers will find their time well spent here, especially if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Pigs in Blankets just down the road. It's close enough for a morning sortie without needing to pack a lunch, though you easily could spend two hours wandering if you're in no rush. Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after the first twenty minutes, but if you've got teenagers who actually walk, they'll appreciate the lack of crowds.

The forest works well as a break from the beach-and-caravan routine. Combine it with Kessingland Beach Holiday Park if you want the option of a proper woodland walk mixed with coastal time, or The Hollies if you're after something quieter. No entrance fee that I'm aware of, and no facilities to speak of - bring what you need.

Best visited on a dry day when the paths aren't waterlogged. Early autumn's lovely when you've got a bit of colour starting to turn, but honestly it's decent year-round if you don't mind the weather.
