Jenkin's Pool

A modest freshwater pool just outside Dalbeattie that punches above its weight as a spot for a quiet afternoon. Jenkins Pool sits in rolling countryside, the kind of place locals know but visitors often miss entirely. The water itself is the main draw - clear enough on decent days to actually see what's going on beneath the surface, with a decent bank for standing or sitting if you fancy a bit of stillness.

This is walker territory, really. The pool works best as a leg-stretch between longer routes across the Lowlands rather than a destination in its own right. Half an hour here, maybe forty minutes if you're in no rush, then you'd want to move on. Families with young kids might get twenty minutes of entertainment before the novelty wears off. There's nothing fancy about it - no café, no facilities that I could see - so come prepared.

It's free to visit and open at all hours, which is the way these things should be. The real value is how it slots into a caravan park week in the area. Stay at Glenearly or Gorsebank - both are practically on the doorstep - and you've got Jenkins Pool as a nice walking circuit combined with exploring Dalbeattie itself, which has a bit more character than you'd expect from a small Dumfries town. The granite quarry heritage is worth a look too. On a grey day, though, the pool loses its shine. Go when the weather's decent.
