A few miles outside Maybole lies one of those archaeological sites that doesn't announce itself with visitor centres or tea rooms - just an old pit that's quietly important. The site itself is modest. You're looking at an old open-cast working from the 1300s or thereabouts, where miners would have dug down to reach coal seams that locals burned for heat. Truth is, you need to know what you're looking at to get much from it. There's limited signage, and accessibility information is thin on the ground. Best visit during daylight when you can properly see the pit formation, and don't go expecting a developed visitor experience.
