Jarvis's Copse

You won't find crowds at Jarvis's Copse. It's a proper slice of New Forest woodland just outside Brockenhurst, the kind of place locals know and tourists often miss. The trees here are old growth - oak and beech mostly - with a floor that's soft with centuries of leaf litter and dappled light that makes you want to walk slowly, not rush through.

The woodland paths are straightforward enough, though muddy after rain, so decent boots matter. It's not a dramatic walk - no dramatic viewpoints or sudden drops - but that's rather the point. This is where you come to listen to birdsong, spot the occasional deer, and remember what an English forest actually feels like away from the manicured bits. Allow a couple of hours if you're not pushing it; families with younger kids can do it in forty minutes without feeling hurried.

Historically it's interesting to woodland enthusiasts - proper coppiced management over centuries has shaped what grows here - though there's no interpretation on the ground. Come autumn the colour is understated but lovely. Summer can feel close and warm in the tree canopy, so spring or October are the better calls.

It's handily placed if you're staying at Long Meadow Campsite nearby. The walk fits perfectly between breakfast and lunch, or as a gentle afternoon after a longer moorland ramble elsewhere in the New Forest. Not Instagram-friendly, but genuinely restorative.
