Jack of the Locks

The lock keeper's cottage at Jack of the Locks sits right where the Calderdale Way meets the Rochdale Canal near Elland, a proper working piece of industrial heritage that most people drive straight past. It's named after Jack Crossland, who kept these locks for decades and became something of a local legend - the sort of character who'd know every boat that came through and probably have strong opinions about how they handled the gates.

What you're actually looking at is a humble stone building that tells the story of canal life in West Yorkshire. If you're into industrial archaeology or just fancy understanding how the network functioned, it's worth a wander. The locks themselves are still operational, so there's a decent chance you'll catch a narrowboat passing through if you time it right - that's when the place comes alive. The surrounding towpath is lovely for a walk, and the whole area connects nicely into the wider canal network.

Historiots and industrial heritage buffs will get the most from this. Kids might find watching a boat pass through more engaging than standing at the cottage itself. Allow 20 minutes unless you're settling in for a longer towpath ramble. There's no formal visitor infrastructure that we're aware of, so it's very much a roadside stop rather than a scheduled attraction.

Base yourself at Elland Hall Farm Caravan Park just down the road, and you've got easy access to both this and the broader Calderdale Way network. Hebden Bridge and Old Chamber Camping are close alternatives if you want something slightly different.
