Iwade Nature Park

The marshes around Iwade sprawl out flat and wide, giving you proper views across the Swale to the Isle of Sheppey. It's not dramatic stuff - no cliffs, no woodland drama - but there's something about the quiet of it that gets under your skin after twenty minutes of walking.

This is a working landscape, not a polished nature reserve. You'll see birdwatchers with their scopes dotted along the footpaths, especially in winter when migrant species swing through. The paths themselves are well-maintained, mostly flat, which makes it good for families who don't fancy scrambling up hills. Allow a couple of hours if you want to loop around properly without rushing.

It suits walkers and twitchers far more than you'd bring young kids for a day out - they'd get bored once the novelty of "look, a field" wore off after half an hour. The real pleasure here is in the slowness of it: spotting a marsh harrier, noticing how the light changes across the water, finding a decent spot to sit and just be quiet.

Sheerness is minutes away, which makes this a natural add-on if you're based at Sheerness Holiday Park or Ashcroft Coast Holiday Park. Pop here in the morning, work off some energy, then head into town for fish and chips. Free to access, naturally - it's just open marshland with public footpaths. Best visited outside summer when the light's better and the birds more active.
